title: La Bête (The Beast)
cast: Sirpa Lane, Lisbeth Hummel, Elisabeth Kaza
director: Walerian Borowczyk
released: 1975
plot:
A young English woman is arranged to be married to a count's son with a mysterious past linked
to a legend of a sex-craved beast that roamed the property.
featured celebrities: Lisbeth Hummel, Sirpa Lane
comments:
As Lucy (Hummel) sleeps, she dreams about the beast attacking
Romilda de l'Esperance (Lane), periodically
waking up to check on
Mathurin de l'Esperance (Benedetti) before going back to the
sexually-charged nightmare.
This scene is the center of the film where the legend of the raping
beast is re-enacted. We see a werewolf of some kind with a big penis
with a never-ending ejaculation, a woman attacked by the beast in the woods
and subsequently enjoying her sexual encounter with the monster, and a young lady
masterbating herself with a rose. It's an explicit male fantasy typical of the era
and oddly very similar to future Japanese films involving beasts and demons first raping
women who eventually succumb and find pleasure in the attack. From a historical
point of view, it almost seems as if this was the inspiration for later Japanese erotic cinema,
and there is no doubt that this was original, ground-breaking, and disturbing no matter what
the decade.
