Madeleine (Winslet) who helped The Marquis (Rush) smuggle his writings out
of the asylum, is murdered by a patient inspired by one of the Sade's more
violent passages. She had listened to his tales with great interest, all along
keeping her chastity. She died a virgin. In a dream sequence, Abbe (Phoenix)
mourns over her virginal body and the beauty he could have tasted. She suddenly
awakes and the two become one. But when he finishes, he sees the image of Christ
with tears of blood. He had lost his way, yet his beliefs are too skewered to
know which is wrong: a life giving in to your sexual desires, or like Madeleine, a life
lived never having known the pleasures of the flesh.
